Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Steve Cannon, Richard Russo, and Rebecca Saletan to be Honored by Poets & Writers

POETS & WRITERS: In March 2018, Chimamanda Adichie will be honored by Poets & Writers alongside writers Steve Cannon and Richard Russo, as well as editor Rebecca Galetan.

Adichie will receive the 2018 Barnes & Noble Writers for Writers Award, which was established by Poets & Writers in 1996 to recognize authors who have given generously to other writers or to the broader literary community.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Receives Honorary Degree from the University of Edinburgh

UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH: On August 26th, acclaimed Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie received an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters from the University of Edinburgh at St Cecilia’s Hall. The award was presented by the University’s Principal and Vice Chancellor, Professor Sir Timothy O’Shea.

While in Edinburgh, Ms. Adichie took part in the Edinburgh International Book Festival, during which she was interviewed by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

“Dear Ijeawele, or a Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions” Named Winner of the Le Grand Prix de l’héroïne Madame Figaro

THE GUARDIAN (NG): “Dear Ijeawele, or a Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has been named one of three winners of Le Grand Prix de l’héroïne Madame Figaro.

The prize was established in 2006 by the French magazine Madame Figaro to celebrate heroines of French and foreign literature. Out of 15 candidates for 2017, the jurors selected one French novel, one foreign novel in translation, and one biography, memoir, or nonfiction work. Chère Ijeawele, ou un manifeste pour une éducation féministe (Ed. Gallimard), the French translation of Dear Ijeawele, was selected as the winner in the latter category.

Along with Adichie, Alex Stresi was awarded the prize in the French novel category for Lopping (Ed. Stock), and Lauren Groff received the foreign novel prize for Les Furies (Ed. De l’Olivier).

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Elected into American Academy of Arts and Sciences

VENTURES AFRICA: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has recently been elected into the 237th class of the prestigious American Academy of Arts and Sciences, one of the highest honours for intellectuals in the United States. The author will be one of 228 new members (including 40 foreign honorary members) to be inducted in October 2017.

AMERICANAH Chosen as the Winning Book for the “One Book, One New York” Program

BUSINESS INSIDER: New York City residents have selected Americanah out of five candidate novels as the winning book for the “One Book, One New York” program.

The program encourages all city residents to read the same book in an effort to revitalize small book stores and create a greater sense of community among the city’s readers. The city has also donated 1,000 copies to branches of the New York Public Library for readers to check out.

PURPLE HIBISCUS is the 2017 One Maryland One Book

MARYLAND HUMANITIES: Purple Hibiscus has been selected as the 2017 One Maryland One Book. The novel was chosen by a committee of librarians, educators, authors, and bibliophiles in February from more than 120 titles suggested last fall by readers across the state under the theme “Home and Belonging.”

Chimamanda Adichie Elected Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters

AMERICAN ACADEMY OF ARTS AND LETTERS: When the American Academy of Arts and Letters holds its annual induction and award ceremony in May, fourteen newly elected members and three foreign honorary members will be inducted into the 250-person organization.

The new Foreign Honorary Members are Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Kaija Saariaho, and Zadie Smith.
